With his often larger-than-life sculptures in public spaces, Anatol Buchholtz (1927–2011) created powerful symbols of understanding—between people as well as between humans and nature. As the longstanding chair of the German Federal Association of Visual Artists and a member of the board of the International Association of Visual Artists, he was deeply committed to promoting the interests of artists, as well as encouraging intra-German and international cultural exchange. This monograph traces the life of the sculptor, architect, cultural politician, and conservationist. It illuminates his work in an art-historical and contemporary context and highlights the close ties between artistic approach and social engagement.
