One of the great lures of drawing lies in the “prima idea,” or the artist’s first creative spark. In contrast to other genres of art, its privilege is that it is capable of immediately capturing every artistic caprice—from fleeting notions and specific ideas to fantastic visions — on a piece of paper. Drawing’s high value and its primary status in the visual arts are revealed through the historical term disegno. Published in conjunction with the exhibition in the Kupferstich-Kabinett in Dresden, the catalogue introduces the relevance of drawing as a stimulus for contemporary art and provides insight into the current dialogue between drawing and the other arts.
