Dominik Schmitt

Dominik Schmitt is a painter and illustrator and also creates filmic works, sculptures, installations, music, and lyric poetry. A dark, almost bleak-seeming atmosphere dominates Schmitt’s pictures. His confusing, melancholy imagery shows the inside of bodies of animals, human beings, and mysterious hybrid creatures. At the same time, the pictures also have an unmistakably ironic-humorous, intentionally childlike-naive quality. In his works, he again and again questions art per se as well as his own subjectivity. He creates his large-format works in mixed media, paper and wallpaper past, acrylic paint and water, oil paint, pens and chalks, or spray templates.
