Erwin Gross’s oeuvre occupies a special place in contemporary painting. He came to the attention of wider audience in 1982 through his participation in Documenta 7. He utilizes diverse art-historical references such as to the landscape painting of Romanticism, along with an almost sculptural handling of paint, which is more rubbed in than applied with a brush. The impression of the rough and the solid is juxtaposed with transparent portions that call to mind light watercolors. Many of his paintings are inspired by natural scenes manifested in a symbolic, abstract manner. We see a “landscape” and simultaneously an abstract painting.
The book brings together works from 2010–15 for the first time.
