What role does contemporary photography play in the discussion of the multi-layered concept of ‘homeland’, and as a medium which both shapes perceptions and constitutes memories? Since the end of the Cold War, the question of identity-establishing reference points in the countries of Eastern and Central Eastern Europe is of especial importance. The exhibition catalogue highlights this issue from both a historical and present-day perspective against the backdrop of sociopolitical change. The pictorial worlds emerging from both internal and external points of view create a delicate balance between past and future, tradition and progress, and local and global developments.
