K.H. Hödicke
karborundum
For all the painterly self-confidence and compositional certitude displayed by K.H. Hödicke’s paintings, his art betrays a distinct detachment from those forms of painting culture which aim at refinement and visual cuisine, a detachment which has grown over the past years. Particularly his more recent works relinquish elegance and external virtuosity—perhaps because he fears the hermeticism of perfection and the retreat into the spheres of pure aesthetics. [...] For it is indeed a style with which one can be at loggerheads—and painting of such a material quality as is exhibited by Hödicke’s most recent works will certainly not satisfy standard tastes, which expect a painted picture to provide comfortable pleasure."
