The PURPLE PATH Art and Sculpture Trail brings together more than 60 works and artistic positions by national and international contemporary artists in public spaces across Chemnitz, the Ore Mountains, Central Saxony, and the Zwickau region. In this cultural landscape, shaped over centuries by mining, craftsmanship, and industry, but also by exploitation and solidarity, artworks can be found in distinctive locations—from industrial wastelands and train stations to riverbanks and the still waters of a millrace. Richly illustrated and featuring concise texts, this volume presents the works along the PURPLE PATH. Conversations with Olaf Holzapfel, Jan Kummer, Bettina Pousttchi, and Hoda Tawakol, together with an introductory essay by curator Alexander Ochs and a contribution by art historian Sarah Alberti on the role of art in public space in eastern Germany since 1990, provide a comprehensive overview of this major and lasting project of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025.
With works by Nevin Aladağ, Alice Aycock, Tony Cragg, Jana Gunstheimer, Jeppe Hein, Olaf Holzapfel, Leiko Ikemura, Via Lewandowsky, Frank Maibier, Osmar Osten, Sean Scully, Monika Sosnowska, James Turrell, and many others.
