Louis Niebuhr (1936–2025) is one of northern Germany’s most distinctive sculptors. His work moves between the figurative and the abstract; between the human form, architectural space, and philosophical reflection. His public art and sculptures in stone and other materials combine physical presence with conceptual depth and bring fundamental questions about what it means to be human to the fore.

This publication is the first comprehensive work dedicated to Louis Niebuhr’s artistic oeuvre. The author Dr Rainer Beßling, who had known the artist personally and accompanied him since the 1990s, documents Niebuhr’s development from his first pieces to his late work and places it in its art-historical context. In addition to the sculpture that formed the focus of Niebuhr’s work, chapters on his photographic grattage and diaphragms (works on plastic film incorporating wire) offer insights into the artist’s less well-known mediums.
