KUBA – the mysterious island, a country of revolutionary dreams and myths, always stuck in the past and at the threshold to the future, the isle of pleasure, rhythm and sunshine.
Martin Kulinna travelled around Cuba in 2011 and 2012 and photographed what he saw. He lost himself in a Cuba far away from the decay that has long since become a cliché. In his fascinating portraits he presents laid-back, free and easy “heroes” in everyday scenes. In these narratives and faces, the profane is permanently in combat with the sacred, as is understatement with exaggerated posturing.
When the island has been completely over-run by the Western culture of consumption, we will look in vain for images like these.
