Michael Wutz is the fourth winner of the Horst Janssen graphic arts award and is committed to producing his artistic work on paper: his etchings, sepia drawings and watercolours are technically extremely complex and often portray strange, gloomy scenes. The skulls, gallows trees and black city silhouettes conceal the artist’s in-depth analysis of cults of the dead and the burial rituals of other cultures. The artist’s interest in archaeology and ethnology, which plays a role in his works, is also reflected in the interdisciplinary texts accompanying his works.
