Nguyen Xuan Huy paints and draws with great virtuosity, and his works of art are as disturbing as they are intriguing. Although still influenced by his country of origin—post-communist Vietnam—the artist feels that he has mentally arrived in his second homeland of Germany, after nearly two decades there. His new paintings remain drastic, but are more layered and reduced to a European format. Gloomy landscapes and desolate interiors have replaced the white backgrounds. Nguyen Xuan Huy paints women whose hearts have been torn out, or as hybrid creatures and target, spread open and exposed. It seems as if a new, dark era is looming.
