“Urlaub vom Hirn” (Time out from the brain) presents a cross-section of Ronald Kodritsch’s work from 1994 to 2012. Subversive humour and irony constitute a leitmotif in many of the titles and paintings, illustrating his characteristic combination of the banal, intuitive brushstrokes, abstraction, figuration as well as ironic and kitsch images.
Yet Kodritsch’s art is more than mere superficial wit. That which we see reveals complex inter-relationships; that which is in the foreground focuses our view upon the impenetrable; that which is absurd rejects that which supposedly gives meaning and irony and derision attack the conventions of the powerful.
