Sebastian Jung’s publication is dedicated to the current theme of fleeing in an unusual way. It first and foremost takes a self-reflective look at what has always existed. It concerns narcissism, the fears, desires, and future projections of us locals, which intersect with the experiences of horrifying violence, but also desires and future projections of those who have fled. What links the two is the focus: the modern Western world’s promise of salvation. In a prologue and four acts, the artist presents heterogeneous individual works that are self-contained, but also interlinked in an overarching narrative arc, in a striking range of media and design processes—drawings, inks, watercolors, photos, and texts. The book produces a constant movement between various actors, perspectives, and problem areas. With his radically subjective approach, Sebastian Jung draws attention to the precariousness of existence in our Western “paradise.”
