As a universal cultural asset, Christian visual tradition has long continued to develop within a secular context. This publication, however, is not about sacred art or religious beliefs in general. It focuses on works of art that refer to Christian symbols or themes, but critically reflect upon them, transforming them and transferring them to new substance-related or aesthetic contexts. The selection of works concentrates on art from the past twenty-five years, and encompasses paintings, works on paper and glass, sculptures, photographs, video, film, and complex installations.
