Werner Berges (1941–2017) was a pioneer of German Pop art. Juxtaposed with his well-known serial grid pictures of the 1960s in which the female body is ornamentalized in various ways, this catalogue included 100 abstract paintings, created between 1970 and 2000, in which figuration and abstraction are interwoven in a filigree way. This central group of works, which has, however, up to now remained in the background, is crucial to understanding Werner Berges’s œuvre as a whole and has been appraised in-depth for the first time.
