Daniel Douke

Beyond Appearance

The work of the Californian painter Daniel Douke investigates existence and appearance and the dilemma between truth and reality. Since 1976/77 his main focus has been on the perception of everyday objects. Following his wish of creating specific, non-idealised objects, which appear to be part of the real, tangible world, his works – illusory objects that look like real drink cartons, food packaging and parcels – present themselves to the captive gaze of the viewer. Thanks to the use of acrylic and/or oil paint, these works look like found objects that have been slightly manipulated by the artist. With the aim of extending our perception and according it more meaning, Douke manages to freeze time with his boxes, and thus change something temporary into something permanent.
