David Koloane

Featuring previously unpublished works, this catalogue honours the achievements of David Koloane, one of South Africa’s most important contemporary artists.
In his drawings, Koloane depicts life and the towns and cities of his country in his characteristic, strongly expressive, gestural style. Koloane addresses issues such as the city, the vulnerability of the individual, the vitality of the big city and the transformation that South African society is undergoing – all of which he conveys with a haunting realisation. City views of Johannesburg, glimpses at the buildings lining the streets thronged by big city commuters, the famous pictures of stray dogs and portraits of prostitutes are particularly impressive testimonies, presented here for the first time ever.
