Der Neue Stil

Ernst Ludwig Kirchners Spätwerk

In Switzerland in the mid-1920s, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) developed an abstract representation that he called the “New Style”. After his tapestry-like landscape panoramas of the early 1920s, Kirchner wished to “recreate the inner image with abstract forms”, especially in his paintings of figures, he did this with great success. This exhibition, seventy years after Kirchner’s death, is co-presented by Lyonel Feininger gallery in Quedlinburg and the Kirchner Museum in Davos, and presents around 100 works from public and private collections. It throws new light on a period of the artist’s oeuvre that has received less attention to date.
