The 2nd awakening of Modernism

Expressionism – Bauhaus – New Objectivity
The art historian, collector and publisher Walter Müller-Wulckow moved from Frankfurt am Main to Oldenburg in 1921 to set up the Landesmuseum of Art and Art History. His goal was to convey the ideas of Modernism; one of his activities was the establishment of a gallery of contemporary art. Working with the “Vereinigung für junge Kunst” (Association of young art), he presented pioneering exhibitions of contemporary printmaking, painting and arts and crafts. The catalogue and the exhibition detail Müller-Wulckow’s long-term commitment and present this forgotten awakening of the avant-garde in the Landesmuseum via an extensive range of works and documents, most previously unpublished, from the rich and diverse collection of the museum.
