Emscherkunst 2016

Art in the Public Space in the Eastern Ruhr Region

The idea of having art accompany the re-naturalizing of the Emscher River has developed into a triennial and long since a regular big event. One hundred days of city and nature, a fifty-kilometer art route, and seven exhibition spaces are utilized to present contributions on the topics of climate change, ecology, and future energies. The list of artists, whose approaches to the topic range from the humorous to the radical, reads like a “Who’s who” of international contemporary art.

The publication documents the intelligent, lively, and yet distinctive works that enrich not only the Emscher but also the art landscape in a surprising way, beyond any sculpture park monotony.
