Feininger in the Harz Mountains

In 1917 and 1918 Lyonel Feininger, future Bauhaus master, spent the summer with his family in the town of Braunlage in the Harz mountains, despite travel restrictions. A great number of landscape drawings were created here. In these Feininger developed his artistic expression, influenced by Cubism, and which had not been seen on this scale before. The drawings are not only successful artistic impressions of Feininger’s visit to the Harz Mountains, but also represent an important stage in his development: towards woodcuts and also towards the clarification of design issues. The juxtaposition of both techniques means that this publication presents an instructive comparison and portrays the unique works created in the Harz Mountains as an important contribution to the clarification of design issues by the artist, leading to Feininger’s characteristic art in the 1920s.
