Florian Doru Crihana

Satirical idylls

Romanian artist Florian Doru Crihana occupies a special place among Europe’s critical artists, not least because of the tools that he uses. It is not the overworked “pointed pen” with which he impales political aberrations and everyday confusion. Instead, Crihana uses a fine brush and oil paints to conjure up meticulous and finely painted idylls, which masquerade as a perfect world but which, on closer inspection, show those flaws and cracks that raise questions about any work produced by humans. Faith in technology, environmental problems or even surprisingly fanciful variations on themes that have established themselves in the general understanding of the image are just some of the motifs that are revisited by Crihana, including bitter principles.
