Frank Rödel

Terra Incognita. Images of a Polarstern Expedition

Frank Rödel is an artist with an insatiable curiosity: the Antarctic, which he photographed during an expedition made by the Alfred Wegener Institute and later ‘relived’ in his paintings, was the only continent that he had not visited before that.
This exquisite volume is much more than a travel diary through the polar seas of the Antarctic. Rödel’s pictures fascinate the viewer as they merge with almost scientific intensity and their topographical structures hint at their historicity. The artist knows about the limited nature of every momentary experience and therefore seeks to surround them in long series of pictures.
