Landscapes from Fra Angelico to Monet

The great variety of the colours and shapes of nature are the point of departure for landscape painting – yet it is often the human form that is reflected in its depiction, seeking and finding itself in nature. In the exhibition and catalogue, around fifty works from the Rau Collection illustrate the developments of landscape painting up to the era of Modernism. From Fra Angelico to Claude Monet; from the transcendent golden heavens of the Middle Ages to the fantastical earthly caves of the Renaissance to atmospheric Baroque landscapes and the Arcadian idylls of the 18th century, passing through the Romantic powers of nature right up to the Impressionists, who capture the moment within the flow of time.
