In the summer of 2008, Jean Yves Klein won a competition to decorate the Gendarmerie, a new and important meeting point in the heart of Berlin. As part of this project, the artist created a colour wooden relief measuring 5 x 14 m.
In situ since May 2009, this impressive work evokes the sensuality, passion and precipices of Dionysian celebrations and leaves no doubt as to their everlasting allure. Klein’s vibrant panorama is also a reflection of mythological and art-historical quotations. Diego Velazquez’ “Los Borrachos or The Triumph of Bacchus” from 1628 is of central importance. This catalogue ushers in these contexts but is above all a diary and album of an artistic process and the ideas and distortions that it entails, right up to its irrevocable conclusion.
