Jochen Stenschke

Pictures in Black Boxes

The artist Jochen Stenschke reflects on possibilities, thoughts and feelings through the medium of painterly expression. He links diverse visual traditions – from the ornamentalism of Islam to the abstract and concrete art of western Modernism – opposites whose common roots he tries to find. Organic forms and colour resonate and seem to float in space and create a rhythmic structure. The artist creates a canon of holistic forms and shapes out of this dynamic process, covering cultural borders and spaces of tension. Due to their presentation in a former coal mixing plant, Stenschke’s “pictures in black boxes” attain a particular force that reveals hidden structures and the details of a universal visual language to the viewer.
