Joseph Beuys

Rooms 1971-1984. Sculptures and Objects 1952-1974 in Kaiser Willhelm Museum Krefeld

Joseph Beuys was connected to the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum in Krefeld from the early 1950s on. Thus, thanks to the artist, a great number of his works are included in the museum’s collection. These include one series that consists of seven central works; Joseph Beuys created an independent permanent installation in 1997 for these. This series involves the space of the museum, not only physically, but also conceptually. This installation is one of the few works of this artist in the entire world that has remained unchanged at its original exhibition site. Even so it has been largely ignored by art research to date. Therefore in 2008, for the first time, a scientific symposium took place in Krefeld that focused on this ensemble. The main body of this event, six fascinating essays, complemented by a great number of photographs (some published here for the first time) make a valuable contribution to research on Beuys.
