Lienhard von Monkiewitsch

Farbe und Raum — Color and space
Space is the central theme in the work of Lienhard von Monkiewitsch. The book’s point of departure is his floor and skirting board paintings from the late 1960s and early 1970s, which led to international renown for the artist, and then investigates his Roman architectural paintings; continuing the development of the theme of space on the constructive and concrete level.
The theme of Malevich’s black square is developed; this takes us to the linking of random colors with a deep, non-reflecting black to create new color spaces. At the same time, the artist investigates the viability of compositional principles that are determined according to the Fibonacci number progression or according to randomly created constellations of form.
The articles deal with different aspects of his work and discuss these within their respective art historical context.
