Martin Schwenk

Home Grown

Martin Schwenk’s fantastical worlds of plants suggest the same kind of magical atmosphere once evoked by the prepared naturalia of cabinets of curiosities in times gone by. Since the 1990s, the focus of Schwenk’s work has been on dealing with Nature as a surface onto which emotions can be projected, a vestige of society and the starting point for artistic expression. His biomorphous, chapped creations hang from walls and ceilings and wind their way across floors: each plant, inspired by the remnants of a once-cultivated Nature and the interstices of built-up urban spaces, is individual, its origin and constitution remaining shrouded in mystery.
