Axel Grünewald looks at the edges of the present. For more than five years, he has repeatedly traveled through the coastal regions of Morocco and southern Spain, to the continental border between Europe and Africa.

Meret’s Sparks

The contemporary art collection at the Kunstmuseum Bern, part 2
2013 marks the centenary of Meret Oppenheim’s birth. As an homage to the artist, “Merets Funken” brings together paintings and sculptures by selected young Swiss artists in a dialogue with works by the grande dame of Swiss art from the collection in the Kunstmuseum Bern.
The exhibition focuses on the legacy of the renowned artist and a reappraisal of her impact and raises questions about the role of contemporary surrealism, with which Meret Oppenheim herself had a very ambivalent relationship. Demonstrating sources of inspiration and topicality in the context of the power of her earlier works facilitates a dialogue that spans eras and generations.
