Michael Nowottny. De L’Apocalypse

Portraits

Throughout the different phases of Michael Nowottny’s paintings his work has been centered on the subjects of man and human struggle. Michael Nowottny´s expressiveness and clarity allow him the transfer of topics such as passion and sensibility to today´s everyday life in an objective and formal way. His staying abroad as for example in Gotland and Florence inspired him to deal with medieval religious and artistic motifs which have turned out to remain a constant theme in his work. Even in his treatment of the normal and the monstrous he does not forget to bring in a smile or to give his works a touch of humour. The truths of his worlds reflected in the extensive volume of his portraits never lose the traces of individuality and close contact. In Nowottny´s works the term portraits includes also the idea of space and events. Michael Nowottny also outlines digital sketchbooks by using camera and video techniques which have become a substantial part during the process of formation in which his paintings gain shape. The artist documents the developmental process of his work in the form of videos, photos, pencil sketches and water colour paintings. The process of painting and finishing a piece of work becomes thus the central subject of Michael Nowottny´s work.
