Werkbund, Bauhaus and Ulmer Schule, Germany’s three great socially zero-based design movements of the early twentieth century, set standards internationally. By the 1980s, however, it was Italy that had become Europe’s design powerhouse and even today, it is to Italy, Holland, France and Scandinavia that the world looks when it comes to European design. The focus of attention here, therefore, is not the industrially manufactured, functional object, but rather a selection of exhibits ranging from simple, limited edition products to visionary projects as courageous as they are radical. The current situation of the German design scene is viewed here through the works of Jerszy Seymour, El Ultimo Grito, Marti Guixé, Katharina Wahl, Julia Lohmann, Weisshaar & Kram, Bless and Mashallah, the point being not to define, but to ask what quintessentially German design might be...
