Only appearances are not deceptive

seeing as an interactive process

“Only appearances are not deceptive,” believed Josef Albers, who more than almost any other artist was interested in the relativity of perception. In Interaction of Color, his 1963 colour course, he used mainly colour drawings to examine the interdependency of “factual facts” (objective visual conditions) and “actual facts” (subjective, sensate experiences of seeing).
Taking Josef Albers as its point of departure, this exhibition and catalogue are dedicated to that unsettling tug-of-war in which seeing becomes the specific challenge. In addition to Albers’s work, the exhibition also includes works and related copy by Günter Fruhtrunk, Donald Judd, Adolf Luther, François Morellet, Paul Osipow, Bridget Riley, Qiu Shi-hua, Leon Polk Smith and Victor Vasarely.
