African art is still largely unknown in the German context, nor does it feature much in public discourse.
“The Space Between Us” sets out to remedy this by turning the spotlight on the work of various African artists and on the resonance it has had in Germany. Developing approaches and a discursive language that are at once both appropriate and provocative is an integral part of the project, as is the attempt to anchor them in the context of Afropolitan practice.
The focus is on African art that addresses themes such as mobility, migration, history and art history but that also mirrors visionary transnational practices and encourages greater engagement with historiography and the legacy of colonialism.
