Verfreundete Nachbarn

Deutschland – Österreich
The German-Austrian relationship has a long but also burdensome tradition; the multifaceted and, at times, dreadful history of this relationship is the subject of the richly illustrated book.
Germany and Austria are linked to each other, as they are to no other neighbouring country, through their cultural and political similarities reaching back to the centuries-old connection of the Holy Roman Empire and, which is reinforced by their common language. The relationship between the two countries has been determined, both by the trauma of the Nazis and by the radical separation of the two countries after 1945, led by the Allied occupation forces, which ended in the political reformation of Germany and Austria.
The book shows the political, economic social and cultural points of contact, and the continuities and fractures in the relationship between the two countries. It begins with the period from 1804/1806, as, with the establishment of the Austrian Empire and the end of the Holy Roman Empire, for the first time the two countries began to separate, and ends with the present situation, which, since the end of the Cold War has been greatly influenced by the EU membership of both countries.
