Wolfgang Mattheuer

Evening, Hill, Forests, Love. The other Mattheuer

Wolfgang Mattheuer (1927-2004), one of the great postwar German artists, was a committed ethical thinker and critic of society. His paintings provoked political and social discussions in the GDR, stimulating and moving a large public, and, in a subversive way, changed public consciousness. In addition to his many critical works, Mattheuer painted many atmospheric landscapes, shaped by the spirit of German Romanticism. Expansive spaces, wide horizons and endless skies are metaphors of change, of the longing for that which lies beyond, of freedom. This catalogue shows this less well-known aspect of the Leipzig artist’s work, and provides a comprehensive review of his Romantic landscape paintings.
