In this catalogue, which accompanies an exhibition of the same name, traditional Christian Passion piety is compared with a current and contemporary realisation of the theme of pain in art. Fascinating parallels and contexts emerge. With the depiction of the Passion of Jesus, the wound has a long tradition in Christian culture as a symbol of pain. This continues to prevail right up to the art of the 20th/21st century: After the experience of two world wars, the portrayal of trauma and suffering has become one of the most important themes in Western culture and is constantly reinterpreted and updated.
