Leiko Ikemura
Intermediate Worlds
Time and again, Leiko Ikemura addresses the topic of nature and landscape in her work: her natural spaces are distinguished by the fact that they are closely interwoven with the dream creatures she depicts. In Ikemura’s spherical paintings, figure and nature coalesce into homogeneous landscapes, and these metamorphoses of person and space explain her unmistakeable imagery.
The work of the Japanese artist, who has held a professorship at the Berlin University of the Arts since 1991, includes painting, graphics and sculpture in changing dimensions. Numerous works are presented in this book for the first time among them short films in which she shows a sequence of drawings as in a flip book, thus illustrating the serial and metamorphic nature of her works.
