Ulrike Möschel
When I was a boy
Ulrike Möschel’s works sensitise us to the emotional temperature of spaces and things. Taken out of their everyday settings, simple objects, like doors, windows, swings and slides, with reference to the usual repertoire of objects elicit individual images in the viewer. Their appeal to some imaginary use however is prevented by the awareness that their artistic transformation has reduced their usefulness: like the swing attached to a ‘silver’ thread whose twisted supporting cables are coming apart in the place where our hands should be. The slide, on the other hand, with its obvious traces of the effect of violence, reveals – despite its condition of having the elegance close to that of a dancer – and attains a new identity as a sculpture, since through the loss of its everyday existence, a use-free, fragile and unstable beauty is created.
