Käthe Wenzel
Mixed Systems
The merging of biology and technology is one of the most fascinating fields of research of today. The Berlin-based artist Käthe Wenzel (1972) takes up this topic and puts the disciplining and mechanizing of social interactions, public spaces, human and non-human bodies at the center of her works. With subversion and humor, she hence contributes to opening up spaces and to a fruitful dialogue. Her works such as the JelliBelly-Bauchpinselmaschine zur Erhöhung des Selbstwertgefühle (JelliBelly Ego-Stroking Machine bear witness to her playful handling of the topic. The new publication presents Käthe Wenzel’s Maschinen und Service-Projekte (Machine and Service Projects), Stadt-Systeme (Urban Systems), and Organismen (Organisms), which oscillate between creature and automat, biology and technology.
