Große Realistik & Große Abstraktion
Zeichnungen von Max Beckmann bis Gerhard Richter
Great Realism & Great Abstraction: The holdings of German drawings of the twentieth century of the Städel Museum’s Department of Prints and Drawings include around 1800 sheets that occupy a realm between these two poles.
Based on a representative selection of some 100 works, the catalogue mirrors the emphases of the collection that have taken shape over the course of its history. Drawings by Max Beckmann and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner form the prelude. This early modern pictorial language, which oscillated between the near-representational and abstraction, finds its continuation in the figurative and abstract tendencies of the postwar period, represented, for instance, by works by Karl Otto Götz, Georg Baselitz, and Gerhard Richter.
