Eugen Napoleon Nicolaus Prince of Sweden and Duke of Närke, one of the sons of King Oscar II, is one of the most famous Swedish painters and patron of the arts of the fin-de-siècle period. His decision to become an artist caused an uproar since this went completely against the societal norms of the nobility. He studied first in Stockholm, from 1887 in Paris and then participated in exhibitions all over Europe. His atmospheric landscape paintings dealt largely with motifs from his homeland, and demonstrated the artistic development in Sweden towards independent, modern painting at the end of the 19th century. Prince Eugen had a close affinity to Germany and exhibited in Berlin, Dresden and Munich. This project presents Prince Eugen to the German public as a painter and, at the same time, documents his role as a collector and a patron of the arts.
