Stefan Kürten. Black Mirror
Prints1991–2009
The “house“ is the artistic motif of Stefan Kürten. The diverse mentalities that the artist develops for this theme range from idyllic to ominous. An enchanted park with an American wooden house, an obsessively tidy garden in front of a detached family home in Germany or a threatening garden of palms with swimming pool – all versions of the idyll as a place to escape from rationalised everyday life, but equally a comment on the discrepancy between desire and reality. There are signs everywhere of the disintegration of the colourful fabric that holds the world together.
Black Mirror, a chronological catalogue raisonné, presents all of Kürten’s prints created between 1991 and 2009, in addition to his paintings. This publication, which illustrates the influence of techniques on each other as well as the production process of the prints, also serves as a documentary reference work due to the technical details about the prints.
