LIEBE.LOVE
Couples
The couple – bound together with longing, affectionate or erotically fused in the act of love, but also formal, aloof and alienated – has always been one of art’s themes and symbols.
This catalogue shows how the contemporary artistic view of the couple has changed a great deal and has been significantly extended. Artists have used the image of the couple to reflect on autobiographical experiences, traditional gender roles and everyday observations as well as on media images. Images of couples in an estimation of that feeling of connection that is very hard to describe: love and the illusion of love.
Using painting, graphic art, sculpture and photography as well as a number of texts, the catalogue and exhibition move from classic modern art to contemporary art and investigate the presence and meaning of the couple in art and society today.
