Lovis Corinth und die Geburt der Moderne

This catalogue, which was produced in collaboration with the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig and the Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie in Regensburg, provides an excellent survey of the oeuvre of Lovis Corinth. Its point of departure is his thematically varied early work, within which diverse stimuli are fused together. In these mythological and biblical portrayals, portraits, landscapes and still lifes, Corinth developed into a vibrant impressionist and a leading light of the Berlin Secession. In his expressive later work, the power of the colours and painting style triumphs over representational vocabulary of form. The catalogue brings together around 100 paintings as well as drawings and graphic works, entering a dialogue with his German and international modernist contemporaries as well as a selected group of works by later artists. Thus Corinth is presented as a unique artist, lying between tradition and the avant-garde.
