Martin Brand
Eyes Wide Shut
“Eyes Wide Shut” is young media artist Martin Brand’s first major solo exhibition. In recent years, Brand has completed a series of film and video projects based on observations of young people and youth culture. Accordingly, themes such as the search for identity, aimlessness, instability, the influence of advertising and the media, the formation of cliques and scenes and the use of violence are central to his video projects and installations. In his work, Brand often moves between documentation and fiction, coincidental observation and pronounced staging. His work has been shown at numerous exhibitions and festivals and he has won several awards. He has received scholarships and taken part in artist-in-residence schemes. In 2006, he was presented with North Rhine Westphalia’s Funding Award for Young Artists.
