The far East
Photographies from East Germany 1989–2009
A journey along the German-German border in August 1989 was the point of departure for a subject that continues to interest the photographer Sabine Würich today: the restructuring of East Germany over the last 20 years. The eternal triangle of place, person and memory lies at the heart of her work: places that help to navigate our everyday lives, connected by emotions that evoke specific events. The change in the system meant that many of the places shown here have lost their function: architectonic forms that were the symbol and expression of the former social system have become superfluous. The images in the book are arranged according to aesthetic criteria; not chronologically or topographically. Thus associative tension is created between the photographs and the accompanying texts: virtual time travel back to Germany’s recent history.
