Sudden splashes, sweeping circles, and energetically placed brush marks define the works of Gerda Lepke. Shimmering colour structures are created from many, seemingly random, brushstrokes. At first glance the works appear abstract; however the clusters of lines are always directed towards an object that the artist observed during the creation of the piece: a landscape, a section of the sky, a portrait or a sculpture. Gerda Lepke’s movement between open, powerfully executed forms and a basic underlying order has created her unmistakeable visual language. Dispersion is contrasted with something solid; openness with something final. Her individual style has earned her a well-deserved place in German art. This monograph brings together works from different phases of her determined and unique practice.
