Photography meets Artists
The Transformation of the Portrait
In recent years, photography has moved away from mere reproduction to art photography. Photographed images are exhibited along with paintings and sculptures in exhibitions, galleries and museums as a valid genre of art.
In this illustrated book, Jo Goertz uses portrait photographs to create a link between photographic art and painting. She took photographs of famous contemporary artists, which were then reworked by the artists themselves. The tension created between the image of the self and artistic expression led to the portrait photograph being decorated, partially enhanced or even almost destroyed. These impressive portraits of 25 artists – juxtaposed in each case with the image reworked by the artist – are presented in this book for the first time.
