When viewing Matthias Meyer’s paintings, one feels oneself being drawn layer by layer into their depths. There is always something new to discover in the delicate gradations of color in the glazing technique he has developed. The question of what is actually visible runs as a central theme throughout his work. Interior spaces, cityscapes, bird’s-eye views of the land, and bodies of water seen from above and below the surface are Meyers motifs and he creates illusions of spatiality which, though based on photographically constructed spaces, at the same time destroy this impression.
